| | HT237 HT 237 Origin NW Persia, Shahsavan Date late 19th C Size 6ft7in x 3ft3in(291x99cm) Structure Warps cotton, white Wefts wool Dyes vegetal. Colours 8) salmon, purple, yellow, green, mid-blue, dark blue, ivory, black. Description Eight bands with alternating cross and medalion motifs separated by narrow bands. The background colour is balanced along the length indicating that a clear overal idea of the design was known at the beginning of weaving and carried through to the end. The main border is a large two tone blue reciprocal mendactyl motif on three sides, with a multi-coloured on on one end. The odd border was probably at the start of the weaving and changed to a more striking and effective simple two tone. Note a soft purple at one end. Condition The kelim is complete and in good condition with some repairs in the centre. The handle is soft and light indicating it has been used for some time. Commentary A fine example of weaving made for their own use. The format of bands separated by narrow bands and a simple border is typical of kelims from this area. The border is simple but strong in its effect, and really adds to the overal effect. The soft salmon is very typical of the area.
