Description A small format prayer rug with a light handle due to the finess of the foundation materials. The field and main border is filled with rosettes, and the two minor borders are small flower heads interspersed with X's. Ê Condition The rug is complete except for the end finishes with the outer guard stripe re-woven at each end. The pile is low in the field where there has been some good re-piling. Commentary Although ascribed to Kazak I am by no means certain, it could easily be Karabagh, although neither of these regions are known for their light handle. The rug has a delicate handle and was probably woven to be used as a prayer rug as it is so small and light, making it easy to carry. It was not made for export but for the home market. The design elements are unusual as the only other rug with a significant number of these types of rosettes is in Kaffel,Caucasian Prayer Rugs plate 20 the structure of which is much heavier. The colouring is subdued and subtle with a very nice green in the outer border. References in Literature Kaffel,Caucasian Prayer Rugs plate 20. Price: £1250 ÊÊ | |
